AS.360.385 Documentary Tradition Co-taught with Dr. Bill Leslie
Students explore different genres of documentary photography including: the fine art document, photojournalism, social documentary photography, the photo essay and photography of propaganda. Field trips offer opportunities to explore Baltimore neighborhoods such as Waverly, Greenmount Avenue, and Baltimore’s old Chinatown. Students will work on a semester-long photo-documentary project on a subject of their choice.

389.371 Artist in the Museum Making Books. Co-taught with James Abbott , Director of Evergreen Museum and Library

Students are introduced to the concept of books as art. Led by a photography instructor and curatorial staff, they will be introduced to the wonders of the JHU book collections as well as a privately held one. In the process students will create their own artists’ books which will be included in an exhibition at the Evergreen Museum and Library. Students are required to make a Hardbound Book with dust cover (Fall 2010)​

Students are introduced to issues pertaining to race and politics in Baltimore and create a Photographic Essay on a subject inspired by the course material.

The Peabody Conservatory of Music

AS 371.200 Visualizing Music
This course brings together composition students from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and students from the Photography program of the Homewood Art Workshops. In this course students will create a concert and exhibition whose theme is “making music visible,” to be performed throughout the Evergreen Museum and Library.
Each JHU photography student will pair up with a Peabody student composer to develop an interdisciplinary work that grows out of their conversations and passions. In the process students from our two campuses will have the opportunity to brainstorm and create a program together. Students will explore the history of photography and photographic/music collaboration.

AS 371.162 Black and White Digital Darkroom
In this digital course, students explore the black-and-white aesthetic.
Students meet frequently for critiques and discussions based on historic and contemporary imagery. Emphasis is on composition and developing a photographic style with shooting and post processing. Students are encouraged to make work that is meaningful to them and which communicates its intent to their audience.

AS 371.307 The Photographer’s Book
Students Create handmade books of photographs that illustrate a favorite piece of text. They may work with poetry, song lyrics, a play, a narrative, a diary or their own writing. Students look at medieval manuscripts or even scientific treatises. Field trips to the Peabody Library, Evergreen Museum and the Betty and Edgar Sweren Collection of artist books. This course will be taught by an artist and an artist book designer.

Students use Blurb Software to create artist books. Led by a photography instructor, museum curator and book artist, students will be introduced to the wonders of the JHU and Sweren artist book collections.

AS 371.305 Photographs and Text Art of the Narrative
In the tradition of the illuminated manuscript, students will use photographs and text to creatively tell a story. Their journey will begin with visits to the George Peabody Library, The Walters Art Museum and the Sweren collection of artist books where they will take inspiration for their semester project. The resulting portfolio will be exhibited at the Evergreen Museum and Library.

AS 371.302 Photographic Portfolio
Students work on a semester-long project that reflects their artistic sensibility, passion and technique. They will develop ideas within a seminar style format that allows for conversation and debate and provides a forum for the evolution of their work.

AS.371.303 Documentary Photography: Youth Film Arts
This class combined Mellon Grant recipients (high school seniors) and JHU undergraduates. Students created a photo essay on a subject of their choice.

AS 371.152 Introduction to Digital Photography
Students learn to use their digital cameras through a variety of projects that help them develop technical and creative skills. Critiques and slide lectures of historic photographs help students develop a personal vision. This course goes beyond basic camera handling and the snapshot, to making images that are meaningful to students, enhance creative thinking and offer opportunities to become adept at Lightroom and Photoshop software. Students are provided
digital SLR cameras.

AS.371.330 Evergreen as Muse, A Photographic Exploration Co-taught with Dr. Lori Finkelstein
In this course, taught by an art historian and a fine art photographer, students are introduced to the delights of the Evergreen Museum and Library of the Johns Hopkins University. The history of Evergreen, including family members and servants, the world-famous library art collection and grounds all serve to inspire student work. There will be an exhibition of student work at the museum as the culmination of their semester work.
